AODÁN COYNE
Gaps Between Stars
Philippe Cousin
He has been the guitarist and singer of the Irish band Socks in the Frying Pan for about ten years.
Aodán Coyne is from Ennis in Co. Clare. Born into a family of musicians, he started learning the guitar at the age of 15, after trying his hand at whistle and fiddle, and at the age of 15, he immediately turned to rock music, as a counterpoint to his roots.
But alongside his band, he launched himself in 2014 with a first solo album, in the career of singer-songwriter. On If we only knew, an elegant album of folk ballads on which Aodán performed a majority of songs by Irish authors, it felt like he was burning to sing his own compositions. There were only two of them.
On his new opus Gaps Between Stars, all the titles are in his own hand, words and music. A collection of eleven songs written over a period of six months.
Although Aodán cannot deny the tradition in which he is rooted, he has nevertheless managed to create his own acoustic and modern universe. Aodán's music is a blend of good-toned folk music and songs full of meaning, while at the same time favouring a warm and relaxing atmosphere.
Of course, he has called on a band of friends, foremost among whom is Emma Langford, who accompanies him delicately on vocals. We also find his two accomplices from The Socks, Fiachra Hayes on fiddle and banjo and Shane Hayes on accordion. Let's also mention Kealan Kenny on electric guitar, Aongus Ralston on bass, as well as Graham Murphy and Chris O'Brien on percussion and keyboards, and you will have a complete vision of the areopagus that accompanies him.
Aodán released his album just before the first lockdown and unfortunately for him, the health situation did not allow him to present it in an ideal way. All the more reason to listen to it at home in the warmth of your own home.
