BRIAN FINNEGAN

Hunger of the Skin

Philippe Cousin

Eleven years after the magnificent The Ravishing Genius of Bones, flutist Brian Finnegan offers us Hunger of the Skin, an album conceived during the long months he spent confined to his home in rural County Armagh in Northern Ireland.

In an age of social distancing, Brian has forcefully expressed the need for human contact, as the title of the album (Hunger of the Skin) comes from one of the many spoken passages on the record. An album that is a celebration of physical connection and emotion.

A member of Flook for over twenty-five years, but also of the all-too-brief Kan and Aquarium, a rock band with Russian Boris Grebenshikov, Brian presents his third solo album, which pushes the boundaries of his music even further with nine experimental tracks heavily influenced by a wide range of musical genres. On this album, it's not really folk music anymore but rather extremely ambitious and virtuoso instrumental music.

Alongside Brian, no less than twenty-five guest musicians, including his Flook companions - Sarah Allen, Ed Boyd and John Joe Kelly. Then there is Seán Óg Graham who recorded and produced the album, and two essential musicians, Liam Bradley whose percussion leaves a lasting impression on the whole opus and Patsy Reid on fiddle and various strings.

There are no songs but the voices are an essential element with several poems integrated to the music: Dust - An Damhsa Dubh, a poem in Irish written and spoken by Gearóid MacLochlainn. And Dare, composed by Brian's sister Morna, a plea for no one to forget the power of good that comes from human contact. It's the pop flavor and Indian touch of Fathom or the jazzy side of Flow, In the Year of Wu Wei. Although different from his previous album, Hunger of the Skin represents a new stage in the career of an artist who has always been at the forefront of Irish music.
