BUÍOCH

Philippe Cousin

The four youngsters from Buíoch are a brand new band formed in County Laois, in the midlands of Ireland.

The least we can say is that talent waits for no age. Ruaidhrí Tierney on accordion, Kurt Dinneen Carroll on uilleann pipes and whistle, Dale McKay on guitar and bodhrán and David Harte on double bass, define themselves as a traditional music band, except that they composed all the tracks on their eponymous debut album.

This gives their music a traditional yet unique and original sound, while distilling an energy that is not forced. Buíoch is the Irish word for 'recognition, thanks', a name they have chosen to symbolise how lucky they are to be able to play music and perform live.
While their instruments are nothing out of the ordinary in traditional music, it's worth noting that, like Clannad and Lúnasa, they have included a double bass, a rather unusual instrument in Irish traditional music. The double bass is present from start to finish, playing in counterpoint to the melody and capable of joining in with the other instruments in all the rhythmic nuances.

The accordion is undoubtedly the driving force behind their music, and Ruaidhrí is the main composer, alongside Kurt and Dale to a lesser extent.
The album opens with a series of lively polkas and continues at the same energetic pace for ten tracks. A hellish rhythm is also found on Late Night in Sitges, two tracks written after a concert at the Sitges festival in Catalonia. The album concludes with College Dropout, on which the uilleann pipes are magnified.
A young band with a lot going for them, and a bright future ahead.
