CILLIAN VALLELY - DAVID DOOCEY

The Yew & The Orchard

Philippe Cousin

Although Cillian Vallely has not produced many albums under his own name, he has taken part in over sixty recordings: with Lúnasa, Kevin Crawford, his brother Niall, Karan Casey, Tim O'Brien, Alan Simon, Natalie Merchant, Mary Chapin-Carpenter and even Bruce Springsteen.

Born into a famous family from County Armagh in Northern Ireland, he has been involved in music from an early age, switching to uilleann pipes in his teens under the guidance of his father Brian and the influence of Paddy Keenan.

David Doocey was born in Massachusetts, but moved to County Mayo in the west of Ireland. Although trained as a classical violonist, since returning to the land of his ancestors he has focused on traditional music.
And as talents tend to come together, Cillian and David have now come together on an excellent album. The Yew & The Orchard refers to their places of origin, the Armagh orchard for C.Vallely and the Mayo yew for D.Doocey. On this record, the duo have drawn heavily on tradition, and they have been spoilt for choice. They have selected some magnificent tunes, both traditional and their own compositions: four for Cillian and two for David out of the thirty or so on the album.

C.Vallely, a true master of the uilleann pipes and the low whistle, and D.Doocey, a talented fiddler, offer us an anthology of tunes arranged and recorded by a dream team including their brothers, Caoimhín Vallely on piano and Patrick Doocey on guitar, joined by Beoga guitarist Seán Óg Graham.
Jigs, reels, slides, hornpipes and marches follow on from one another in blissful succession. The whole album is a succession of refined and playful dances where the instruments of these two virtuosos meet and intertwine in a delicate and subtle interweaving.
The Yew & The Orchard is undoubtedly a captivating album, full of dynamism and bite, which will appeal to you and make you irresistibly eager to discover these two musicians in concert. At the Festival Interceltique de Lorient, who knows?
