DAOIRÍ FARRELL
A Lifetime of Happiness
Philippe Cousin
From time to time we meet a singer so talented, so natural, that we could drop everything to listen to him. Daoirí Farrell is one of them.
Singer and bouzouki player from Dublin, he did not start out on stage, however, since he worked as an electrician for ten years before turning to a field of interest that has followed him since childhood, music. He launched himself in 2008, produced an album in 2009 and then devoted himself to musical studies for several years. It was on this occasion that he met Dónal Lunny, who produced his album A Lifetime of Happiness. After a break with the group FourWinds, he devoted himself to his solo career from 2016 and the publication of a second album. Here he is back with a third opus, probably the most accomplished of the three.
Daoirí Farrell has been inspired by such famous singers as Liam Weldon, Al O'Donnell, Frank Harte and Cathal McConnell and it is undeniable that they are behind him throughout this superb album. The opus opens delicately on Dónal Lunny's guitar, Pat Daly's fiddle and Daoirí's bouzouki, which mingle with the well-toned voice of this talented singer on standard The Galway Shawl. Then follow nine other tracks, traditional or composed by Johnny Conneely, Alan Bell or Liam Weldon. Love songs - Rosie Reilly, drinking songs - There's the Day, or humorous - A Pint of Plain. And then two North Irish songs including the very beautiful Sweet Portadown. Daoirí Farrell's voice and interpretation are reminiscent of Andy Irvine, Paul Brady or the Scot Dick Gaughan. No wonder he had to accompany the who's who of the Irish scene. Let us quote in bulk Christy Moore, Martin Hayes, Arty McGlynn, Seán Keane, Danú, Dervish, Kila, impossible to mention them all.
With a very beautiful voice, Daoirí is the most gifted ballad singer of his generation and no doubt he will continue to gain notoriety. When will he come to us?
