DERMOT BYRNE & YVONNE CASEY

As we feel it

Philippe Cousin

Dermot Byrne's previous album was released in 2012. He recorded it with the French harpist Floriane Blancke.

Ten years later, he is back with violinist Yvonne Casey with an excellent album As we feel it. Named Musician of the Year in 2013 by Irish television station TG4, Dermot is one of Ireland's most talented accordionists and was a member of the famous band Altan for almost twenty years. He has played all over the world with this band and with many other famous musicians, from Frankie Gavin and Paddy Keenan, the famous KGB trio, to Dónal Lunny and Sharon Shannon.

Yvonne Casey is arguably one of the most representative fiddlers in County Clare music, where she was born. Her unique, warm, passionate style is a tribute to the style of her region. She herself has played with legendary musicians such as Micho Russell and Kevin Griffin.  She has two albums to her credit in 2004 and 2018. Dermot and Yvonne have been working together for just a few years and have just recorded a magnificent album. And for once, I'm talking about a duo, because there is no other musician here with them.

It's a 12-track album, truly original as they are all composed by these two talented performers. As the Irish tradition requires, jigs, reels, barndances, Highlands, waltzes and marches follow one another with happiness. So you won't hear any familiar tunes. There are two small drawbacks, however: the cover is a bit of a poor relation and the album is only 36 minutes long. But these regrets are counterbalanced by the excellence and mastery of these two first-rate artists. It's hard to get more authentic. A success from the first to the last note.
