Didier Laloy Belem and The Mekanics

The fusion of mechanical music, with diatonic accordion and cello

Gérard Viel

The power of an orchestra of symphonic mechanical music, meets the dynamics of the bellows of the diatonic accordion, and the sensuality of the cello!

At the reception of the last album of Didier Laloy "Belem and The Mekanics", dice the first look on the cover, I wanted to discover it. A hanging visual, highlighting the accordion, the cello, unusual silhouettes and improbable machines. It must be recognized that this Belgian accordionist (student of Bruno Letron) has developed over the years a personal artistic project, which carries the public in music without borders and with great emotion and sensitivity. For this new album he goes much further in the creation and the musical journey. For more than two years Didier Laloy shares the road with the cellist Katy Adam in the project "Belem". His meeting with Brussels musician-composer Walter Hus and his extraordinary "Decap organ" marks a turning point in his music. Thanks to this composer, Didier concretizes his dream of working around and with the mechanical music. Contemporary composer and pianist in permanent search, Walter Hus is in the eighties one of the co-founders with Peter Vermeersch of the avant-garde group "Maximalist". Later he will approach the creation of more classical work for opera, dance, theater and film. Since 2000, in parallel with his projects, Walter Hus discovers organs Decap, organs and percussions handled by computer thanks to a very thorough technical evolution. He then conceives his own "Decap Organ" and composes film scores, operas and other pieces for the stage. Since he his born Didier Laloy is fascinated by barbaric organs, mechanical pianos, and music boxes. All the compositions on this album create a perfect fusion between classical music, popular music, film music, contemporary music and traditional music. When Didier holds an accordion in his arms, it is part of his body, his music and his skeleton are one, and in this new album which is a "world premiere" the music of Walter Hus and that of Didier Laloy not only one, to the delight of our ears. The presence of this "sound machine" has no limit for the compositions of these two artists: the bellows of the accordion, crosses the breath of the pipes of this magical organ, notes are smoothed like the water from a limpid source, the strings of the cello caress nostalgic percussions. Later a wild rhythm section propels you into the 21st century and takes us into a world worthy of Federico Fellini's films. On other tracks, you'll feel like you're listening to 100% contemporary music worthy of Pierre Henry. Tango rhythms, captivating waltz, atmospheres of rides with wooden horses, romance, sensuality, energy, this new album by Didier Laloy "Belem and The Mekanics" is a musical and cultural event international scale.
