DIDIER SQUIBAN
YDILL
Philippe Cousin
The Breton pianist Didier Squiban gratifies us with an album, each time a real musical gem.
At the end of 2020 he offers us Ydill, a term he himself describes as a fleeting encounter of youth and without consequence. Fifteen titles follow one another, the majority unknown and for some even totally unknown, since three are unpublished. Most of the tracks appeared on Didier's first albums. They are duets or trios with some of the musicians who have marked the Breton scene for about thirty years. Collaborations that have shaped Didier Squiban's musical universe.
From the very first note, the crystalline sound of Kristen Noguès' harp catches you and the spell of this musical journey will never let you go until the end of the sixty-three minutes of the album.
You will come across Jean Chevalier, Jacques Pellen, Gildas Boclé, Alain Trévarin, Jérôme Kerihuel, Bernard Le Dréau, Nicolas Quemeneur or Ronan Le Bars. And then of course one shivers with emotion when listening to the voices of Yann-Fañch Kemener and Manu Lann-Huel. A total of sixteen virtuosos on harp, sax, double bass, guitar, flute, accordion or uilleann pipes who each time have brilliantly combined with Didier's aerial piano.
An album that he dedicated to the memory of four artists who have left us in recent years and who have accompanied him throughout his thirty-year career: Kristen Noguès, Jacques Pellen, Yann-Fañch Kemener and Jean Chevalier.
This twenty-fifth album is yet another success to add to the credit of an inspired and creative musician.
