DOLORES KEANE

Anthology

Philippe Cousin

Among all the female singers who have graced the Irish stage since the 70s, there is one who is emblematic of both traditional and contemporary Irish song. I'm talking about Dolores Keane, an artist with a deep, unmistakable voice.

She made her debut in 1975 with the Galway band Dé Dannan, which she co-founded alongside Frankie Gavin and Alec Finn. She recorded three albums with them, coming and going as the band toured.

It has to be said that she was born into a musical family, as her two aunts Rita and Sarah, who raised her, were themselves renowned singers, and her own brother was none other than Seán Keane, also a famous singer.
But Dolores didn't just sing with Dé Dannan, she also went her own way with songwriter John Faulkner, whom she married and with whom she recorded three more albums. She has also released five solo albums.
In addition, she took part in the album A Woman's Heart alongside Mary and Frances Black, Eleanor McEvoy, Sharon Shannon and Maura O'Connell, an album that would become the best-selling album in the history of Irish music.

This time, to mark his seventieth birthday, Dublin-based label Dolphin has released Anthology, a triple album featuring a selection of 50 songs from his repertoire, recorded over a career spanning almost fifty years.
It includes some of his greatest hits, which listeners will easily recognize from their extensive airplay. These include Caledonia by Scotland's Dougie McLean, Rambling Irishman or Sweet Forget-Me-Not with Dé Dannan, Solid Ground or The Island. A number of duets feature in the repertoire, including Whistle, Whistle Daughter with Eleanor Shanley, Sonny with Mary Black and Emmylou Harris, Isle of Hope, Isle of Tears with her brother Seán. And then The Bonny Light Horseman or Johnny Lovely Johnny with John Faulkner. And the icing on the cake is a new track that closes the album, My Refuge, a kind of story of his own life, a song about resilience, redemption and hope.
In three CDs, this is an excellent overview of a rich musical career.
