DOOLIN'

Circus Boy

Philippe Cousin

Here come again the most Irish of the Toulousans, I mean the band Doolin' who hadn't offered us anything since 2016. They come back in 2023 with a sixth album entitled Circus Boy with a much more pop and less Irish tone than before.

Recorded partly in the United States during their 2019 tour, then in France between two lockdowns, partly in Paris and partly in their native southwest. Whereas their previous album had a distinctly Irish flavour with a hint of French chanson and American music, this album is much more eclectic, more adventurous, with a majority of original compositions.

This is an opportunity to tell the story of their personal journey and in particular their travels and tours through friendship, camaraderie and the values of solidarity, as on Circus Boy which gives its title to the album or Six In The Morning. The song Darkest Way, which is inspired by folk-pop bands, is quite surprising.
We will listen with interest to Top Of The Mountain which evokes the difficulties of the world. A reminder of their hometown with L'Amour Sorcier by Claude Nougaro, itself introduced by a very Irish fiddle solo.
It's also Man Smart (Woman Smarter) sung by Harry Belafonte over sixty years ago. A moment of bliss with Chicago Waltz which, as the name suggests, will have you spinning.
The members of Doolin' have received the support of a host of musicians for this album, including the talented fiddlers Niamh Gallagher, Niall Murphy and Guilhem Cavaillé, himself a former founding member of the band.
Navigating with equal talent between pop, bluegrass, jazzy flights of fancy and, yes, a touch of Celtic influences, Doolin''s new album is quite original, even if for my part, I preferred their more Irish influenced records.
