DUACH

Philippe Cousin

Irish musicians come and go from band to band as they meet each other musically. These three met a few years ago when they were playing with folk singer Damien Dempsey and the desire came to form a traditional music trio.

The first of them, Éamonn De Barra, is a Dubliner from the De Barra musical clan. Playing the flute and bodhrán, Éamonn was notably at the origin of the band Slide but he also accompanied Moya Brennan and Sinéad O'Connor.

John McLoughlin, also from Dublin, is sometimes considered one of Ireland's finest guitarists. After flirting with blues and classical music, he became interested in traditional music at an early age, accompanying singer Seán Keane.

Seán Regan was born in Manchester to Irish parents and like many emigrants, he was immersed in traditional music from his early years. He was introduced to fiddle at the age of thirteen, an instrument he never left. In the early 90s he joined the band Toss The Feathers alongside flautist Mr. McGoldrick. Back in Ireland, he plays regularly with Seán Keane, Sharon Shannon, Andrea Corr and Finbar Furey.

These three masters of Irish music have formed the Duach trio who present us with the album of the same name. And as tradition is their cup of tea, they offer us eleven tracks deeply rooted in it.

What could be more natural than to find six jig suites from Strop the Razor to The Hunter's Purse. Two hornpipes too, The Golden Eagle and The Independence. And reels The Dublin Reel and Come West Along the Road. We recognize the song Siobhan Ní Dhuirbhir popularized years ago by Clannad and which highlights the beautiful warm voice of Éamonn. Her companions are not to be outdone since they also sing on the track Oh Good Ale.

With great virtuosity, fast rhythms and catchy melodies, is takes the audience to the Emerald Island as three of the tracks were recorded during a concert in Switzerland.

The only question is, will this trio continue beyond this first album?
