ÉAMONN O'RIORDAN & TONY O'CONNELL

Rooska Hill

Philippe Cousin

Both from County Limerick, one of the bastions of traditional music in the West of Ireland, Éamonn O'Riordan and Tony O'Connell present Rooska Hill, an album on which they are joined by guitarists Arty McGlynn and Gearóid Ó Duinnin and bouzouki player Brian Mooney.

Tony started playing music at the age of eight. He is a self-taught concertina player who won his first All-Ireland title at 13. And during his teenage years, many awards followed. His distinctive style has often been described as steady and pulsating, a characteristic of the Irish West.
Tony is also known for his particularly expressive melodic and harmonic variations. In the past he has recorded two albums, including one with fiddler Andy Morrow.
Athea-born flutist Éamonn O'Riordan also has four All-Ireland titles to his credit, a significant pedigree.
Rooska Hill is the high point of West Limerick, an area known for its vibrant traditional music. As this is the region from which the two musicians come, they had only to draw on this rich musical heritage.
The combination of flute and concertina produces a subtle and light music that allows a great deal of interaction in the melodic line of the ensemble. Together with their three guests, they play brilliant, lively music, very precise, full of feeling and energy.
The general impression of lightness coupled with a sure-footedness is present throughout an album that offers us a selection of tunes in the best vein. Reels and jigs follow one another, interspersed with hornpipes, slides, barndances and flings, a dance from this region.
Twelve tracks, all of which are traditional and performed with remarkable brio.
