EOGHAN NEFF

Unrecalled

Philippe Cousin

I already told you about Eoghan Neff many years ago when they released two albums with his brother Flaithri. But back then their music was mostly traditional.

Not so this time. Eoghan has pursued a solo career, experimenting with fiddle music in a variety of areas. He released his first solo album ten years ago, in which he emphasised the purely acoustic nature of the instrument.

Since then, Eoghan has spent many years exploring and mastering the full range of sounds that a fiddle can produce: scrapings, squeaks, whispers and pure musical sounds. And he has put the fruits of all this experimentation into his music to create an acoustic feast.

Now he returns with a new solo album, one that once again combines sound with visual art forms. Entitled Unrecalled, it is a sonic dialogue about our relationship with memory, with the collaboration of other musicians involved in experimentation, from Spain - L.A.R. Legido, from Galicia - Anxo Lorenzo and Germán Díaz, from Iceland - Atli Örvarsson, and from Ireland - Seán Mac Erlaine, Caoimhe Doyle and Sean Caprio.

An original concept that fits into this art-box version containing visual works associated with each track, including illustrations by Nóra Neff Mateos and photos by Kathleen Price. It is an ambitious album that oscillates between minimalist soundscapes and pop-trad, including violin loops in duet with the other musicians.

Yet we will recognise in passing some traditional songs, here reworked by Eoghan, such as Unrecalled composed by Donegal fiddler John Doherty, in a quite innovative version. And if you listen carefully, you'll hear jigs, reels and slides, but here they're put through the mill of an experimental asymmetry rarely explored in Irish music.  An adventurous and complex album.
