EWEN HENDERSON
Steall
Philippe Cousin
Originally from Fort William in the Lochaber district of the Western Highlands, Ewen Henderson was introduced to traditional Scottish music alongside his two sisters and his brother Allan who plays in Blazin' Fiddles.
Thus it was at the age of five that he began studying the fiddle. Later he also learned the bagpipes, whistle and piano, making him an accomplished musician. Over the years he joined various renowned bands: Battlefield Band, Skipinnish, Afro Celt Sound System or Mànran which he co-founded with Garry Innes and with which he plays most often. But he has also had the chance to play all over the world alongside a host of Scottish artists.
Over the last few years, Ewen has accumulated awards including five Scots Trad Music Awards. And when he's not on tour, he's a much sought-after musician who has composed soundtracks for films and television.
He has finally found time to take an interest in his own career by recording a breathtakingly beautiful first solo album Steall (torrent, cataract, squirt). Ewen's project was to produce a series of vignettes reflecting the many interests, influences and backgrounds of his musical life. Listening to this superb opus, one finds a cascade of musical impulses. The memories, natural beauty and history of his native region inspired Ewen for this album: a patchwork of original songs and tunes as he wrote many of the eleven tracks.
For example, the energetic Gantocks takes its name from a group of rocks on the West coast of Scotland while the airy Camus Daraich finds its inspiration on a beach on the Isle of Skye. A few traditional songs are scattered throughout the album, such as Òran a' Bhranndaich.
Not content to excel on a host of instruments, Ewen is also able to sing, only in Gaelic, demonstrating that he is an artist in his own right. Thus Caileag Ruadh Staoinebrig composed for his own wedding.
He is assisted by some musical greats, such as Ewan MacPherson, James MacKintosh, James Lindsay and Thomas Gibbs. From beginning to end, a quality album that underlines the great talent of a musician who is still little known in our country but who deserves to be discovered.
