FIONA TYNDALL
New Frontiers
Philippe Cousin
Originally from County Clare, Fiona Tyndall has always had a deep love for traditional Irish music and in 2004 she released Déirín Dé, an album mixing traditional songs with more modern arrangements.
A few years later, Fiona emigrated to Boston where she met jazz musicians with whom she produced a second album Moonglow. She has also released several Christmas singles in Irish and English. Now she is back to her first love with a third album No Frontiers, albeit a short one with only five tracks. Fiona returned to Dublin during the pandemic and spent a year putting the finishing touches to a superb album.
The album features only songs by Jimmy McCarthy, a famous Irish songwriter whose songs have often been covered by Mary Black, Tommy Fleming and Christy Moore.
For this project, Fiona called on musician Brendan Hayes, who wrote all the arrangements, to give new inspiration to standards from the Irish repertoire: No Frontiers, The Contender, As I leave behind Neidín. With Brendan at the piano, Fiona brought in her two daughters Aisling and Caoimhe who shared their talents to add tender harmonies to the recording, especially on the song Neidín.
A few other accomplished musicians came to support them: Kieran Munnelly on flutes, Tim Edey and Seán Whelan on guitar, James Blennerhasset on bass and Liam Bradley and Davie Ryan on percussion. All in all a great showcase of individual and collective talent. Fiona Tyndall's tribute to Jimmy McCarthy makes you want to hear more. So Fiona, when will there be a more substantial follow-up this time?
