FOURWINDS

Philippe Cousin

They have been playing together as a band since 2013, but each of them, despite their youth, already has a strong career behind them, either as a soloist, a duo or in various formations.

FourWinds is made up of Caroline Keane from Limerick in the concertina, Robbie Walsh from Dublin in the bodhrán, Tom Delaney from Ennis in the uilleann pipes and whistles and Daoirí Farrell from Dublin, a singer and bouzouki player.
On their first album they are joined by Joanna Hyde on fiddle, Paddy Kiernan on banjo and Tony O'Flaherty on bass.
Eleven tracks follow one another energetically, delivering a modern and creative music that draws its roots from Irish tradition. Some twenty instrumentals interspersed with four songs that allow us to appreciate Daoirí's beautiful warm voice.
If they claim the influence of Bothy Band, Planxty or Moving Hearts, they show throughout this opus, an amazing energy that finds its culmination on a strong album, both musically and vocally.
Alongside the traditional ones, two tracks composed by Caroline: The Piper's Patience and The Black Valley Reel. The Ludlow Massacre, a superb song written by Woodie Guthrie, is worthy of mention, not to forget the bloody episode during which twenty-six striking miners and their families were massacred by the Colorado National Guard in April 1914.
Their repertoire, which covers a vast area from Dublin to Kerry to Co. Clare, is rich and effective, and this first album will surely call for more, to our great pleasure.
