GARADICE

Sanctuary

Philippe Cousin

Formed following the Leitrim Equation musical project, Garadice released an album in 2018. Five years later, they are back with a second album, Sanctuary.

With this album, the four members of Garadice invite us on a musical odyssey that pays tribute to both the past and the present. The song of the same name is a tribute to the working class. Written by Vincent Woods and set to music by Mairtín O'Connor, this superb song evokes the hardships faced by workers in the Arigna mines in County Roscommon, just outside Leitrim, where the four musicians hail from. In fact, the photo on the cover was taken in the coal mine.

A mixture of instrumentals and songs, both traditional and more recent compositions, the album is a real musical gem. Comprising jigs and reels as well as an Italo-Galician suite, the album showcases the talents of Pádraig McGovern, Dave Sheridan and John McCartin, enhanced by the ethereal voice of Eleanor Shanley.
Together they bring age-old melodies to life, infusing them with contemporary vitality. The superb Song for Kathryn is an emotional listen, and Down by Blackwaterside, named after a river in the Northern Irish counties and popularised nearly 30 years ago by Mairéad d'Altan, is a familiar tune.

As on their first album, they have called on a number of other talents: Dónal Lunny on bouzouki, Tom Morrow fiddler from Dervish, Neil Lyons on bodhrán, Kieran Leonard on percussion and Eleanor Quaine backing up Eleanor Shanley on a few songs.
Sanctuary is the perfect example of the power of music to transcend time. Listen to this little gem and you'll embark on an extraordinary journey that will make you forget the miseries of the world.
