GAVINY

Vent de l'ouest

Philippe Cousin

A few years ago, in Trad Mag, I presented Outside Duo, a Celtic folk pop band formed by Antoine Solmiac (fiddle) and Julien Grignon.

Three albums in their bag. But in 2019 Julien leaves the musical adventure started in 2006. The duo became a group, Gaviny, with the arrival of two singer-musicians, Arthur Révé (guitar) and Jean Urien (drums). All three are from Finistère, and are rooted in Brittany and therefore very attached to their identity. The origin of their name is a locality, Kergaviny, which was also one of the titles on Outside Duo's album Just Playing.

Their music balances between pop, folk and Celtic, the three musicians mixing their various influences to offer us songs in French with a very Anglo-Saxon resonance. Their first album, Vent de l'Ouest, is twelve tracks full of meaning. A sort of inner journey that addresses fundamental existential questions for these three thirty-somethings. Ta maison, for example, is the subject of a video clip that has recorded more than 160,000 views on social networks. A track that emphasises resilience, a song according to Covid that is also an invitation to travel. Or Et toi, born from an encounter in the streets of Manila. It is also Comment le bonheur? which questions the future. And Brittany is never far away with Des violons, des voiles, Nos rêves vivants or Vent de l'ouest.

Texts written and composed by Antoine and his two friends but also by Julien Grignon who was at the origin of their musical adventure, Gérard Jaffrès, Patxi Garat or François Welgryn. In the end, a beautiful album, with undeniable Celtic roots and Anglo-Saxon musical influences, on which love, travel, the relationship with nature and the world are the main themes for this friendly trio.
