GENTICORUM

Au cœur de l'aube

Philippe Cousin

On this side of the Atlantic, we know a few traditional music bands from Quebec: Le Vent du Nord, La Bottine Souriante, Grosse Isle...

But there are many others, such as Genticorum, yet to be discovered here. And yet their formation dates back to the late 90s, and over the past twenty-five years they have released seven albums and four EPs in 2020, downloadable during the Covid pandemic.

Over the years, the trio formed by Pascal Gemme (fiddle, mandolin, feet and vocals), Yann Falquet (guitar, Jew's harp and vocals) and Nicholas Williams (flute, accordion and vocals), has carved out a place for itself on the traditional, folk and Celtic scenes. All their albums have received unanimous critical acclaim.
They are renowned for their energy and stage presence, as well as their original arrangements. And they've performed all over the world.
Their recent album Au cœur de l'aube is a delightful musical stroll through Quebec, set to the rhythm of podorythmie (foot percussion), a technique widely used in French-speaking Canada.
Six instrumental tracks and six songs carried by the warm timbre of three male voices, each with a distinct Franco-Quebecois accent and imbued with the Quebec dialect.

Songs with universal themes of love, death, drink and excess, kings and shepherdesses, sailors and boatwomen. Each member of the group has an expressive voice, and the three of them strive to magnify the complex harmonies that characterize Franco-Quebec song.
When they're not singing, our three friends present traditional tunes, or tunes they've composed themselves, with highly original arrangements. Of particular note is Dans les haubans, taken from a Breton song. Or La Batelière, which opens the album and tells the story of a young girl who takes a young man across a river. Goûtons du plaisir is an excellent example of Quebecois vocal harmonies.
An original, catchy album.
