GRÁINNE BRADY

Back and Forth

Philippe Cousin

Originally from County Cavan, halfway between Dublin and Sligo, Gráinne Brady is a fiddler and composer who spent many years in Glasgow and was thus heavily influenced by the Scottish metropolis's music scene.

She returned to Ireland a few years ago, bringing with her a musical repertoire inspired by Irish and Scottish traditions. Rooted in the lyricism of Cavan and its neighbor Leitrim, her playing combines depth and lightness. Raised in a musical family and therefore steeped in Irish tradition from a young age, Gráinne has developed a vast repertoire and a distinctive style imbued with storytelling and emotional subtlety. Her compositions have often been recorded by other musicians. Fiddler Patsy Reid, for example, describes her as a very talented fiddler.

Gráinne has already recorded two albums, and 'Back and Forth' is her third. This is a vibrant collection of traditional and sometimes contemporary music, shaped by tunes that have accompanied her since childhood, as well as by her years in Glasgow. This delicate album oscillates between energetic reels, lively jigs, hornpipes and barndances, and a few more introspective melodies. Here and there, you'll recognize some familiar tunes. And the contributors include Johnny Doherty, Charlie Lennon, Paddy O'Brien, Ed Reavy, and Donald Shaw. In short, a veritable who's who of the genre. A lively and melodious album, deeply rooted in tradition and the fruit of many years of practice, both in Ireland and Scotland.

Gráinne is accompanied by a trio of musicians: Andrew Waite on accordion, Michael Biggins on piano, and Innes White on guitar. Their talent and sensitivity bring warmth and dynamism to the arrangements, while preserving the essence of the melodies. A delicate and sensitive album that will happily accompany you.
