HANNAH HARRIS
At the Core
Philippe Cousin
Another American musician, you might say! Hannah Harris is a violinist and singer who has been based in Detroit, Michigan, since 2017, where she quickly made a name for herself in the traditional Irish music community.
Like many, she began by studying classical violin before being introduced to Irish music at the age of 8. She continued to play with unwavering determination, which led her to study Irish music at the University of Limerick and then in Cork, where she earned a master's degree. No small feat. Her style is steeped in the music of this region. Since then, she has been teaching fiddle, mainly online.
After her first album, Tea For Tune, in 2020, she is back with a second opus, At The Core. With twelve tracks and around thirty tunes, Hannah offers us a wide range of traditional music. There are no personal compositions here, but tunes borrowed or received from the most famous Irish musicians: Matt Cranitch, Dónal Murphy, Paddy Fahy, Bríd Harper and Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh.
Polkas such as the three tunes that open the album, from Sliabh Luachra in south-west Ireland, but also reels and jigs, of course. And then a few songs, as Hannah has a lovely voice: Mountains of Pomeroy, The Limerick Lasses and A Stor Mo Chroi, a famous song about emigration.
She is accompanied by several musicians: Randy Clepper on bouzouki, Ciarán O'Connell on accordion, Jacob McAuley on bodhrán and Alberto Whitmer on guitar.
A sensitive, subtle and delicate album, full of rich ornamentation to convey the Irish lilt (melody).
