JOHN DOYLE & MICK McAULEY
Philippe Cousin
Mick McAuley is known as the accordionist of the band Solas, with whom he played for almost twenty years and with whom he recorded no less than nine albums.
What is less known is that he is also an excellent guitarist and singer. This time he has teamed up with a long-time friend, also a former member of Solas, guitarist and singer John Doyle, forming an excellent duo that has been touring for several years.
Each of them has several albums to their credit and for this reunion they didn't think it necessary to give their album a title. Their surnames are enough for themselves.
They are both composers, singers and multi-instrumentalists. You'll pardon the pun. Which bodes well for the quality of their new album. John's powerful, rhythmic guitar sound and Mick's instrumental skills take us on a musical journey of beauty.
A clever combination of instrumental pieces and songs, most of them composed by one or the other of these virtuosos, we can find some traditional Irish songs: Bay of Biscay or Abe Carmen.
Two songs in particular stand out, It's Sunrise, written and sung by Mick, which deals with human rights and the futility of war. And One Fine Day, written by John, an incisive, hard-hitting song that also addresses the negative effects of war and the evil actions of certain policies, as well as the terrible plight of refugees around the world.
In addition to all the instruments they play (guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, bass, keyboards, accordion, low whistle and harmonica), they are joined on a couple of tracks by Oisín McAuley on fiddle and Donnchadh Gough on bodhrán (Danú) and James MacKintosh (Shooglenifty), who add some superb colours to a beautifully constructed album.
J. Doyle and M. McAuley have sometimes been described as one of the most dynamic duos in Irish music. A perfectly justified remark.
