JOHN SPILLANE

In Another Light

Philippe Cousin

John Spillane was born and raised in Cork, a city he has never left and which continues to inspire many of the songs he has written since the early 1980s.

After helping to found the band Nomos, with whom he started out, he went on to pursue a solo career and has a dozen albums to his credit to date. He returns this time with In Another Light, recorded live with the Cork Orchestra in the autumn of 2021. A live album that saw John invite Dingle singer Pauline Scanlon, with whom he has collaborated many times. The album covers his entire career: ten songs in all, written between 1983 and 2019.

This festival concert features a symphony orchestra led by conductor John O'Brien. John and Pauline perform songs that they have been singing for years. But this time, the presence of the orchestra has forced them to take a different view of them, to relearn them to fit a classical formation. The result of this recording is a successful marriage of the songs' lyrical and melodic brilliance, enhanced by the classical accompaniment. And John himself finds himself rediscovering some of the songs that have followed him over his almost forty-year career.

We recognize the titles that made John Spillane's success: The Dance of the Cherry Trees, All The Ways You Wander, We Come In The Wind, Prince's Street and especially the unavoidable Passage West, a place near Cork that is particularly dear to him since he lives there. Throughout the tracks, we rediscover some of John's well-known lyrics, but this time dressed up with new arrangements, the strings and the brass giving them a most successful rebirth.
