KARAN CASEY

Nine Apples of Gold

Philippe Cousin

We left Karan Casey in 2018 with the excellent album Hieroglyphs that tell the tale. The Cork singer is back in early 2023 with a superb album Nine Apples of Gold, her ninth release.

In the meantime, she has helped create the feminist movement FairPlé, which deals with the gender balance in Irish music. A movement she presides over and whose influence is perceptible on this new album, which focuses on the emancipation of women.
Karan defends the idea that songs can sing what we cannot say. Her feminist heart is expressed in the ten songs she has written and composed for nine of them. The only traditional one is The Rocks of Bawn.
On this album, Karan has teamed up with long-time collaborator and friend Seán Óg Graham, who accompanies her on all the tracks and produces the album. Together they have created a dynamic and enchanting album. Ten songs that speak of camaraderie in times of conflict, of life in the countryside for women and of course of death. An ode to the original world, a return to nature.
And as this is an album dedicated to women, Karan has called on three fellow singers: Niamh Dunne on Sister I am Here for You, Pauline Scanlon on I Live in a Country and Ríoghnach Connolly on Daughter Dear. And half a dozen musicians also joined her to carry and enhance the finesse of her airy voice.
In the end, another success for this Waterford native who was discovered in the band Solas in the 90s. A magnificent and inspired album.
