LOREENA McKENNITT

The Road Back Home

Philippe Cousin

For almost forty years, she has been singing and enchanting us with her spidery voice.

In four decades, Loreena McKennitt has graced us with ten studio albums and eight live albums, not to mention various compilations. That's how prolific an artist she is, with 14 million albums sold worldwide and numerous awards and nominations garnered over the years.

She returns in 2024 with a new album recorded during the summer of 2023, at four folk festivals in Ontario, where she lives. In a way, The Road Back to Home is a return to her roots for the redheaded Canadian, who draws on her Irish and Celtic traditions to offer us a magnificent, mystical album in which her pure voice harmonizes with an array of traditional instruments: harp, accordion, tin whistle, fiddle, mandolin, banjo and guitar.

On the 10 tracks of this new opus, Loreena introduces her audience to old songs revisited in a personal and intimate way. These are songs she performed in her early days in the clubs of Winnipeg (Manitoba), but which she had not necessarily recorded before.
Six of the album's ten tracks are recorded for the first time by Loreena: Searching for Lambs, Mary and The Soldier, popularized in 1976 by Andy Irvine and Paul Brady, Custom Gap, Greystones, Salvation Contradiction and Sí Bheag, Sí Mhór / Wild Mountain Thyme.
Alongside them are standards such as On Bright May Morning, As I Roved Out, Bonny Portmore and The Star of the County Down.
Each song tells a story: love, grief, desire, inner strength, carried by the crystal-clear voice of this multi-talented artist.
A blend of Celtic, folk and even pop and world music, Loreena McKennitt's original music has been critically acclaimed for years. With this absolutely superb album, she's on the verge of success once again.
