MARIE DOLAN – The Right Time -In Am Cuí
Philippe Cousin
She hails from the small village of New Inn in East County Galway.
Marie Dolan grew up in a family where traditional Irish music was highly regarded. So it's hardly surprising that she started singing at an early age. As she grew up, she began performing at a number of concerts and festivals around Galway. Logically, Marie went on to study music at Limerick University. It was here that she honed her style and acquired a unique repertoire.
After many years, she finally decided to record her first album, The Right Time - In Am Cuí. This sympathetic opus presents us with a combination of traditional songs and sean-nós that she has chosen for their melody, songs that allow us to appreciate her vocal abilities and that are here interpreted with delicacy.
There are standards such as The Foggy Dew, Óró Sé do Bheatha Bhaile, An Buachailín Bán, Craigie Hill and Green Grass it Grows Bonny, as well as more contemporary pieces like Norway Yawl and The Dimming of the Day.
We are even surprised to hear a song collected by O'Neill's on which we recognise the melody used by the Dubliners to set poet Patrick Kavanagh's song On Raglan Road to music.
Marie Dolan was joined by a number of musicians: Frank Kilkelly and Peter Donoghue on guitar, Fergal Connaire and Mike Considine on bouzouki, Francis Donoghue on keyboards, Sinéad Deely on tin whistle and Claire Dolan on fiddle.
With her own personal choice of songs and original arrangements, M. Dolan has created a harmonious and sensitive album.
