MISCELLANY OF FOLK

Atlantic Sounds

Philippe Cousin

A few years ago, while on tour in Newfoundland, Danú met fiddler Billy Sutton. It was a musical encounter that lasted, and in 2017 Benny McCarthy, Danú's accordionist, founded the group Cordeen with three accordionists, including B. Sutton.

Although separated by thousands of miles, the music of Ireland and Newfoundland have more than a few things in common. The trio Miscellany Of Folk was founded by Benny and Billy, who were joined by Tipperary-born Irish guitarist and singer Eddie Costello. Formed in 2022, the trio has already played many concerts and they have just brought their partnership to fruition on the album Atlantic Sounds which, as its name suggests, brings together music and songs from traditions on both sides of the Atlantic.

Each member of the band has brought to the trio a wealth of music and experience. Miscellany Of Folk offers a repertoire of six songs and five instrumentals that will get your toes tapping. The original arrangements collectively bring a new colour to the folk genre.
The album opens unaccompanied with Deckhand On A Trawler, a song written by Martyn Travis, a fisherman from County Waterford. The tracks follow one another, alternating songs and instrumentals in a colourful, lively atmosphere.

And as if the three members of the trio weren't enough on their own, they've invited a few traditional stars along: Paddy Keenan on the low whistle, Conal Ó Gráda on the flute, Theresa O'Grady on the banjo, and maestro Bobby Gardiner, who introduced Benny to the accordion, for a lilting vocal performance.
Let's linger over 1962, a magnificent song by Newfoundlander Ronald Hynes.
An excellent first album from this trio of seasoned and talented musicians.
