NUADÁN

Dén Díobháil

Philippe Cousin

Originally were siblings, Cárthach, Pax and Macdara Ó Faoláin, all brought up in the rich musical tradition of An Rinn, the Waterford area of south-east Ireland.

In 2013 they won a competition for young musicians Siansa Gael. It was there that they met Iarlaith MacGabhann from Dublin. And a few years later the band Nuadán was born, which recorded a rather confidential album in 2016. This time they came back with a heavy album, Dén Díobháil, an album of fourteen tracks and no less than twenty-six instrumentals and four songs in Irish and English.

This talented young band strives to carry on the tradition in which they grew up, while adding a few original personal touches here and there. Their respect and empathy for the music of their home region is obvious, deeply rooted as they are in this Gaeltacht. Playing a wide range of instruments, diatonic accordion, melodeon, fiddle, bodhrán, bouzouki, flute and piano, each member of the band brings his own flavour, giving their music a fresh and energetic feel.

Alongside the traditional tunes are two compositions by Pax, Corr Réisc Na Gcéimeannaand Cosán Shíobhra. We will also retain several popular tunes in the sessions: Trim the Velvet Jig, Napoleon Crossing the Rhineor Laurel Tree. One of the characteristics of their music is wonderful arrangements and above all a lively rhythm. Cárthach's accordion playing is also worth mentioning. Intimate and authentic, compact and diverse, full of grace, this is The Pure Drop. If I add that they claim the influence of Planxty, Dé Dannan or the Bothy Band, needless to say that they too are greats and no doubt we will hear about them for a few more years to come.
