Olivier Sulpice
Le Banjo Ténor
Gérard Viel
A man, an instrument, the tenor banjo!
We must dare in 2019, produce an album devoted mainly to tenor banjo (banjo 4 strings)! This is the unusual challenge of Olivier Sulpice with "Bemol Production". This musician is not a beginner, it is found in the group of rock-song with gypsy, Yiddish and Oriental influences "Standing on zinc", and more recently with Flor de Zinc, and Bougnat Sound. Olivier started the banjo 30 years ago, first discovering the sound of the Pogues and their banjo 5 strings, then following many trips in Ireland he discovered that the banjo 4 strings would be his instrument of preference. For history the banjo occupies a special place in the world of traditional music! Remember that in the 90s, this instrument was primarily reserved for Irish music ... .. The banjo allows historical and cultural journeys that range from the African calabash or volcanoes of Auvergne through the celtitude. This album is a musical wonder both in terms of arrangements and repertoire, it makes us travel in Celtic land (Ireland-Brittany), in the directory of Center France. Olivier Sulpice allows us to rediscover standards such as "Tamm Kreizh", "The Walk of Aubrac", and works like "Scottish to Pécoil", "His Davalats / Bourrée to Couteau", not to mention a tribute to Henri Texier " The return of Simone. The arrangements are finely worked out and with a band of talented friends: Jean-Bernard Mondolini at the bodhran, Tiennet Simonnin and Ludovic Rio at the chromatic accordion, Yann Boulas at the clarinet, Ronan Vilain at the guitar and the violin-cello of Michel Esbelin. I have a personal favorite for the energy and sensuality that emerges on the Auvergne directory. If you do not like the banjo, it's time to get this album to immerse yourself in friendly sounds and discover a CD with a human dimension and showcases musical heritage too often misused.
