ONE FOR THE FOXES

Take a Look Around.

Philippe Cousin

I already told you about the first album of a very young band called One for the Foxes, the name of one of their songs. So as a duo, they've since joined Galway guitarist Dave Curley and they now form a trio.

They are back at the beginning of the year with a second album entitled Take a Look Around. Tadhg Ó Meachair, piano and accordion, is a graduate of the music department of the University of Limerick and he participated in the ephemeral band Ciorras under the tutorage of Dónal Lunny. He is also one of the founding members of Goitse, which already has five albums to its credit. His partner, fiddler and singer Joanna Hyde, is originally from Colorado and also studied in Limerick. As for Dave Curley, guitarist and singer, he played successively with Slide and Runa and is involved in various projects including Crannua Collective alongside Moya Brennan, John Doyle, Éamonn and Cormac De Barra, Cathy Jordan and a few others.

In ten tracks they give us to listen to some superb tunes of which they are all the composers except for the traditional song Pretty Fair Maid in the Garden. Four instrumentals and six songs follow one another, remarkably interpreted by Dave or Joanna: Ghosts and Dreams or When We Became None written by Dave or Lost Pints and Shinny Shoes signed by Tadhg, and which proves that the piano, even if it’s not a traditional instrument, finds its place in Irish music. Let's also mention Bat in the Gap, which is a good example of tradition. For their album, this friendly trio called upon two guests: Byron House on bass and Kieran Leonard on bodhrán. Despite their young age, One for the Foxes are undeniably talented.
