PALM BAY FROST
Philippe Cousin
Once again we have the umpteenth Irish music band from Germany, a music that is very popular across the Rhine.
In fact, we should be talking about folk music, as their influences range from Ireland to Scotland, America and even Central Europe. There's no hint of winter or tropical weather in their name. No, it's simply the juxtaposition of their three surnames. Sabrina Palm, from Bonn, is a renowned fiddler who has played her fiddle on the Irish and Scottish music scenes. She even lived in Cork for a while and is probably the first German to have qualified as a teacher of traditional music in Dublin.
For Simon Bay, the accordion is part of his family history, as his grandfather used to play it in dance bands. Although he started out playing the piano and keyboards, he was soon drawn back to traditional music and opted for the accordion.
The third member of the band, Hartmut Frost, fell in love with the guitar and blues in his youth. Then, after having tried his hand at jazz, rock and pop, he tried his hand at traditional music.
These three met in Cologne and are united by a deep interest in folk music. Since 2021, they have been developing a solid musical architecture rooted in the traditions of Ireland and Scotland.
They recently brought their musical collaboration to fruition on a delightful eponymous album. Ten tracks, mainly instrumental compositions by either of them, plus three songs, Still Learning, Outskirt Lullabies and Our Stories, written and performed by Hartmut. And two traditional Irish songs, The Galway and Fermoy Lasses. Beautiful melodies arranged with taste and based on original rhythmic tricks.
And if I add that two of Ireland's finest musicians, Michael McGoldrick (flute and tin whistle) and Eamon Murray (bodhrán), long-time friends of Sabrina's, came along to support them on two tracks, you'll know everything there is to know about this talented band.
