RYAN YOUNG

Just a Second

Philippe Cousin

The Scottish music scene continues to produce ever more innovative talent. One of the newcomers to emerge in recent years is the very young Ryan Young, who lives up to his name.

A distinguished violinist, he holds a master's degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. And he has won an impressive number of awards and distinctions.

After producing a debut album in 2017, his career could have come to an abrupt halt when a problem with his left hand forced him to withdraw. After treatment, he even had to relearn to play the violin. Fortunately, the battle was won and he can now offer us a new album, Just a Second.
Far from the energy of some, Ryan's playing is gentle, sometimes reminiscent of Scotland's Duncan Chisholm or Ireland's Martin Hayes, whom Ryan admits to admiring.
R.Young's music focuses on the Scottish tradition. He breathes new life into it with his unique approach. His touch on the strings is characterised by fresh melodic innovation, infectious rhythm and an impressively precise range. His treatment of traditional and contemplative tunes is enhanced by a breathtaking musical imagination.

The nine tracks on this album combine eighteen songs on which Ryan is accompanied only by Craig Irving's guitar. But far from being a handicap, this minimal presence at his side magnifies the excellence of this young prodigy.
You'll recognise a few classics like Fingal's Cave and Knit The Pocky, as well as compositions by Phil Cunningham, The Monday Morning Reel and Gordon McLean's The Mortgage Burn. Each track is a revelation. A warm and authentic album.
