SHELTA

Twenty

Philippe Cousin

In France, as in many other parts of the world, there are many Irish music fans.

It is from Lyon that the band Shelta comes to us. For two decades now, they have been performing in their region, devoting themselves to the Irish tradition with a devouring passion. Their name refers to the language of the Travellers in Ireland, a community where music had an important place and from which came such famous musicians as Paddy Keenan.  Over the years they have produced several albums, the latest of which is Twenty, which, as the name suggests, celebrates the band's 20th anniversary. The five members of the band have a mastery of Irish music that would make many a Green Erin musician swoon, a practice they have acquired during their sojourns across the Channel

They have assimilated the Irish musical style and this is evident from the first track Princess Nancy to the last track Trip to Durrow. Reels, jigs and waltzes combined with a few songs make up a very coherent whole. Some famous tunes are recognisable, such as Princess Royal, inspired by a composition by the famous blind bard O'Carolan, or The Merry Sisters. Also present is the song Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore, also popular in Donegal under the title Gleanntáin Ghlas Ghaoth Dobhair. And then The Thirty Foot Trailer by Ewan McColl, a nostalgic song about the end of the Travellers, a nod to the band's name.
Listening to this excellent album, you will no doubt feel transported to the heart of a session in the back of an Irish pub. Let yourself be won over by their catchy music.
