SHERIDAN RÚITÍN
Rebels in the Night
Philippe Cousin
The Covid-related lockdown has sometimes had surprising consequences.
Such was the case with Sheridan Rúitín. It was in the spring of 2020, in a garage converted into an underground pub, in Congers in the northern suburbs of New York, that this band was born. To make up for the closure of the pubs, Billy Houlihan met up with his neighbour Sheridan in Sheridan's garage to drink, play and sing songs of the Irish revolution. They are soon joined by other family members who bring their instruments and join the duo.
As the pubs gradually reopened, the band took off, recording a live album and a few EPs. But it was the album Rebels in the Night that really set the seal on the band's career, and from then on they began playing gigs and festivals.
Although most of the songs on the album were Irish standards (Rebel songs), the four members of the band, helped here by two friends, began to create their own arrangements and write some original compositions.
In the USA, the band is now known for its Irish repertoire and its unique blend of folk-rock influences. Their music is rooted in tradition, but with a modern twist. From upbeat jigs and reels to poignant ballads, this is the essence of their repertoire.
The 12 tracks on the album include such standards as The Irish Rover, Marie's Wedding, Star of the County Down, The Foggy Dew, Finnegan's Wake and Boolavogue. But each time, the band's original arrangements make all the difference, allowing us to rediscover these hugely popular ballads.
A critically acclaimed album that has helped make Sheridan Rúitín one of the most popular Celtic folk bands in the New York area.
