SOCKS IN THE FRYING PAN

Raw & Ril

Philippe Cousin

After three albums in six years, the three members of the craziest band on the Irish scene have chosen, after a long American tour, to settle in their home town of Ennis in Co.

Clare and record a live album Raw & Ríl. And for once, the cover of this one is a little less fucked up than the previous ones. Because the brothers Shane and Fiachra Hayes and their little friend Aodán Coyne, if they do not take themselves seriously in the choice of covers and titles they attribute to their sets, they show well on the contrary a talent and a respect for tradition rarely caught in fault. For an hour they offer us five songs and seven instrumental songs bringing together two dozen tunes. Both standards like Out on the Ocean, The Laurel Tree, The Red-Haired Lass or The Pride of Petravore which made the heyday of Dé Dannan, and lesser known tunes.

Aodán has a beautiful, warm and expressive voice and shows great sensitivity by performing songs such as Mormond Braes, a Scottish song, Dick Gaughan's When I'm Gone or Feet of a Dancer, written by Charlie McGettigan and made famous by the talented Maura O'Connell, who for the record is also native to Ennis. The music of Socks in the Frying Pan is so energetic that it is sometimes hard to believe that it is played by a simple trio of musicians. Reels, slides, hornpipes and barndances follow one another at a frantic pace and we are surprised at the end of the album to think that these three energetic people managed to deploy so much power for an hour. Undoubtedly they really have everything great.
