SOPHIE LAVOIE

This time, she’s taking a break from her bandmates to bring us a solo album. She’s been joined by Louis-Philippe Pharand (accordion, harmonica and vocals) and Rémi Lavoie (guitar), whilst she herself showcases her talents on the violin, vocals and spoons.

'Musique Régionale' is her second solo album and, through eight tunes and songs, it naturally celebrates one of the most picturesque corners of Quebec – the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region, her native area. Sophie presents an original repertoire here, developed as part of a project linked to the Jean Trudel archive, from which nearly half the material is drawn.
All eight tracks on the album originate from this region of Québec, whether through oral tradition or via archives. Having initially selected a number of recordings from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Sophie then adapted them, particularly in terms of form and key. She deliberately chose to record her album as simply and naturally as possible. Just two musicians alongside her, and no post-production additions. This approach is particularly evident throughout this delightful album.

Sophie wanted the simplicity and spontaneous creativity of this small group. The album consists, in equal measure, of four tracks from the Jean Trudel archive and four songs that Sophie learnt through oral tradition in her home region. Among the tracks, one recognises a reel, 'Le fil cassé', a waltz, 'Valse des lilas', and a fox-trot, 'Fox trot inspiré'.
Natural, simple and authentic: these are the words that best describe this lovely album. The only (minor) criticism is its brevity: just 26 minutes. It leaves us wanting more.
