STOLEN NOTES

The Ocean Road

Philippe Cousin

Celtic music has long since spread throughout Europe and the world.

And Irish music is played in areas where it is least expected. It is from Andalusia and more precisely from Seville that the band Stolen Notes come from, whose name does not breathe flamenco. They were formed in 2006 during traditional sessions in Seville and since then they have challenged themselves to immerse themselves in traditional Irish, but also Scottish, Galician, Asturian and of course Breton music. In order to "steal the notes" to paraphrase the name they have chosen for themselves, feeding on the very spirit of the different Celtic music.

After studying Irish or Scottish traditions at length, they developed their own style, based as it should be on the music of all the Celtic countries they visited. Their repertoire is based on a selection of diverse and varied traditional melodies that they interpret with respect. This does not prevent them from having started composing. As their album The Ocean Road, their third opus, which gives pride of place to each other's compositions, particularly those of uilleann piper Alejo Parra, The Newyorkers and The Happy Ruinous House. Or Swing Five, co-written by accordionist Rafa Álvarez and flute player Juan Jiménez Almaraz. It is still the song Green Before the Nightfall composed by guitarist John Conde after a trip to Sligo. Asturias is in the repertoire with the Muñeiras da Marea and a small wink to Brittany with the track Ebrel Suite, on which succeed one another gavottes and ridées, including one dedicated to Jean-Michel Veillon composed by the band's flute player. Polkas, jigs, reels and waltzes are part of this excellent album. This shows that music transcends borders and is exported to the borders of southern Europe. Stolen Notes, an extremely talented band to discover without further delay.
