SYR

The Winter King

Philippe Cousin

One more band of Celtic music in the USA, the group Syr who comes from Columbia in South Carolina.

Inspired by Celtic stories and myths, Syr skillfully blends Irish and Scottish traditions, passing them through the mill of good Celtic folk rock to create a raw rock sound that is sometimes reminiscent of that of the Celtic rock band of Nantes EV.

Originally trained by siblings Kyle and Laurel MacCallum who recruited a guitarist Tim Strevens, a violinist Emily Bracey-Neff, a bassist Kelly Huff and a drummer Luis Valverde, they present us on their second album The Winter King, a dozen tracks, instrumental and songs that refer to Scottish history, the battles of the past but also to love and death. The acoustic sound of the album should also please fans of a more hard rock as it points its nose far and wide.

The palpable cold that emerges during the opening track Òran na Gaoithe is not very far from the atmospheres deployed by a metal band. There is also Eulalia and its guitar, bass and drum riffs, with a playful fiddle as if to soften an implacable rhythm. And then the final Invicta which starts with a debauchery of rhythms like The Pogues and continues in a more natural fusion.

An album where tradition is almost carnal with the most unbridled modernity, all in a good big rock sound of the best vein.
