TARA BREEN & PÁDRAIG RYNNE - Nasc.
Philippe Cousin
The concertina is a small instrument of the accordion family, very popular in Irish music and many musicians have adopted it.
Among them, one of the best concertina players is undoubtedly Pádraig Rynne, a native of County Clare in the west, a region where the concertina is very popular. Pádraig is a virtuoso musician and prolific composer. He is an award-winning musician and composer who has mastered the art of experimenting with a wide range of genres.
Since the turn of the millennium he has founded or been a member of various bands, including Guidewires, Triad with Dónal Lunny and Sylvain Barou, Notify, Irish Concertina Ensemble and most recently Atlantic Arc . Originally from Clare, like Pádraig, Tara Breen is a talented fiddler and multi-instrumentalist who began playing music at the age of six. Over the years she has accompanied many musicians and bands including the Chieftains and Stockton's Wing and has won countless All-Ireland awards.
For some years now, Pádraig and Tara have been playing as a duo. They concretize this association by the publication of the album Nasc (the link in Irish). At their sides three big names of Irish music in the person of Dónal Lunny on the bouzouki, Jim Murray on the guitar and Elaine Hogan on the harp.
They took advantage of the lack of concerts last year by recording last December at Miltown Malbay, the Mecca of traditional music. The result of four intense days, a beautiful album of nine tracks where the Irish tradition is mixed with a hint of Scottish melodies - Cairgorm Dance, Asturian - Pasucais d'Amieva, and Breton - St Mat and Ricardo Portela composed by Patrick Mollard.
And then Pádraig, Dónal and Jim also contribute to the repertoire with several of their own compositions - A Slip of a Thing, Greenlights, Portalen, Hats off to Dod or Coolfin Slide that Dónal wrote in 1998 for his band of the same name. An energetic, bright, luminous music by a dynamic and brilliant duo. Surely one of the best Irish albums of this beginning of year.
