TARA BREEN
Sooner or Later
Philippe Cousin
Also a member of the band Notify, whose latest album I presented to you, Tara Breen has just released a solo album, Sooner or Later.
Also from County Clare, Tara is an in-demand fiddler who has garnered much praise for her unique fiddle style, which is very much rooted in her homeland.
Her musical journey began at an early age, when she was introduced to the fiddle by her father Martin, also a renowned musician. Her apprenticeship soon turned into a passion, and her mastery of the fiddle earned her widespread recognition both in Ireland and abroad.
After winning numerous titles in various competitions, she joined the legendary band Stockton's Wing in 2014. Over the years she has also accompanied the Chieftains and the band Ciorras. Currently outside her solo career, she is a member of Notify and the Breen / Rynne / Murray trio. Renowned for her technical prowess and emotional playing, her music reflects a deep respect for tradition.
With such a career behind her, it seems surprising that Sooner or Later is her first album under her own name. On this one, she is joined by Seán Óg Graham on guitar and bouzouki, and Dermot Sheedy on bodhrán. The twelve tracks on this superb album are a succession of traditional tunes - reels, jigs, hornpipes and waltz - the majority of which come from her home region. The album also includes Pottinger's Reel from the Shetlands and The Open Fence by the Scottish fiddler Ian Hardie, as well as All My Friends by Jerry Holland and The Eureka by J.S. Skinner, two musicians from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Tara concludes this beautiful album with two reels by the famous Donegal fiddler Tommy Peoples, Mary and Me and The Celebration.
Tara Breen may have waited several years for a solo album, but it was well worth the wait. Surely one of the best albums of the year.
