THE LoCAL

Philippe Cousin

In the 1980s Moving Hearts led the way in fusing traditional Irish music with a folk-rock section and jazz elements.

Following in the footsteps of this mythical group, briefly reformed in 2007, four musicians reunited in 2019 for a jam session in a Tipperary studio. They enjoyed the experience so much that they decided to formalise their work by founding the band The LoCAL.

Originally, James Delaney on keyboards and Kevin Malone on drums and percussion used to play together. Eager to experiment musically, they called on bassist Eoghan O'Neill, one of the founders of Moving Hearts, who later accompanied Dan Ar Braz on the Héritage des Celtes adventure. The rhythm section was thus established. But they lacked a traditional musician. That's where they met fiddler Ciarán Tourish, who had recently left Altan.
A few sessions later, The LoCAL was born. They got together in Joe Gallagher's studio and things went from bad to worse. After two years of pandemic, they present us their first eponymous album. Eight tracks in fifteen tunes.
The contribution of the excellent fiddler C. Tourish is very rich since we can recognize a number of traditional music standards, among which we can find pieces in Altan's repertoire. The Star of Munster, Cumb your hair and curl it, Jimmy Wards, Matt Peoples, The Broken Pledge...
Ciarán's fiddle plays the melodies and is soon joined by a very energetic rhythm section.  Thus Mrs Malone's grandfather clock on which one almost perceives the throbbing of the clock. The bass and percussion start off very trad-like, and the song takes on a frantic tempo.
Similarly, on Mac Pherson Strut, a chase between the fiddle and the drums takes place, all supported by a tonic bass and petulant keyboards.
All in all, an original, excellent album, mixing all the ingredients of the Donegal tradition with funk and rock. An album that will not leave indifferent the lovers of Irish music and the nostalgic of Moving Hearts.
