THE LONDON LASSES
The One I Loved the Best
Philippe Cousin
I told you about them (in Trad Magazine) almost ten years ago on the occasion of their fourth album.
They are the London Lasses, and, as their name suggests, they come from the British capital city and have been on the stages for twenty years. Their previous pianist Pete Quinn has gone and since then it is Chris O'Malley, pianist and guitarist who is playing on their fifth album The One I Loved the Best.
As members of the Irish diaspora, these five young women come from all over Ireland and their inspiration is marked by the diversity of their origins. Described by Irish Music Magazine as one of the best live bands, The London Lasses offers us a selection of fifteen titles and forty tunes and songs. There are four of them, interpreted with the delicate voice of Brona McVittie, in both English and Irish.
Many sets of reels, jigs, slides, polkas and waltzes follow, each more energetic than the others. This album has captured a band at its best that plays fresh and exciting music with a good dose of rhythm and energy that makes you want to dance, or at least to tap your feet in rhythm.
A band of formidable and talented musicians who remind us that in Ireland or elsewhere, Irish music transcends borders, always excellent.
