The Dimming of the Day.

Philippe Cousin

I already told you about her, when her first solo album came out.

Today the fiddler Bríd Harper is back with a superb album as perfect as the first one. But new this time, she has formed a four-piece band called Uaine (green in old Irish) and they offer us The Dimming of the Day. At her side is Tony O'Connell, a concertina player from Kerry with whom Bríd has been performing for a few years. We also find guitarist Paul Meehan who played with North Cregg, Lúnasa or At First Light. And then, the young singer Lisa Butler who is part of the band Caladh Nua.

In twelve tracks, half a dozen tunes and three songs, they sweep a wide range of tunes from all over Ireland: reels, jigs, hornpipes, mazurkas and strathspeys from the north of the island, polkas and slides from Kerry, as well as two marches. Bríd Harper comes from Donegal, so it is only natural that she has borrowed from the repertoire of the great fiddler Tommy Peoples, which can be found on no less than five tunes: The Dooish, Kinny Cally Hill, the famous March to Kinsale, The Walking Stick and Kitty's Corner. Bríd herself composed the superb melody Turas Go Teamhair, while Lisa sings two songs in English and one in Irish, An Londubh 'San Chéirseach, in a clear voice.

Bríd Harper is a regular at the Toucouleur in Trégor, where she has played several times and given master classes. Watch out for her future appearance in this friendly café-concert. You won't regret it.
