WOLF & CLOVER

Twelvemonth & A Day

Philippe Cousin

Celtic-inspired music is still going strong in the United States. Another band that claims its influence is Wolf & Clover, a band based in Columbus, Georgia, in the southeastern United States.

After two more confidential first albums in 2018 and 2020, they present us this time with Twelvemonth & a day, an album that has a lot to do with Irish tradition and whose title is a nod to lockdown. Three women and three men in this sextet, all of whom are heavily involved in music to varying degrees, three teachers, a music academy director and an orchestra executive.

This is a collection of traditional tunes with some more recent compositions. The album begins with a suite of lively reels, The Columbus Set, and concludes with the famous pastoral O'Carolan's Farewell. In between are nine upbeat tracks, The James Carville Set or The Suitor Set or the more melancholic The Crested Hens or The Whistle Set. An English ballad, The Unquiet Grave and a Van Morrison song Into the Mystic. The members of Wolf & Clover are very attached to Gaelic. Witness the two songs An Rógaire Dubh and An Eriskay Love Lilt, both performed in Irish.
Among all the instruments here, guitar, piano, accordion, whistles, Matthew McCabe's banjo and Jessica Bennett-French's fiddle play a significant part on several tracks, thus demonstrating the band's musicality. A nice album to discover.
